Some of Man's Most Beautiful Creations

The Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. has 36 Doric columns, one for each state at the time of Abraham Lincoln’s death. The walls and exterior columns are Colorado Yule marble, while the interior ceiling is Alabama marble saturated with paraffin to give it a translucent look.

Daniel Chester French's famous marble statue of America's sixteenth president is in the center of the memorial chamber.

Architect: Henry Bacon.
Dedicated in 1922.

The Chrysler Building

The stainless steel spire of the Chrysler Building pierces the Manhattan sky at 1046 feet. In November 1929, the spire was secretly constructed inside the tower and revealed just a week after the construction on Manhattan's brand new and highest skyscraper, the Bank of Manhattan, had concluded.

To the public's utter amazement, the stainless steel cladding of the Chrysler Building was hoisted out of the top of the building and rapidly secured. The Chrysler building had become the world's highest building in all of 90 minutes, surpassing the Eiffel Tower's height by 22 feet.

This Art Deco building remained the highest skyscraper in the world for less than a year, before the Empire State claimed the honor.

Architect: William Van Alen.
Construction completed 1930.

The US Capitol

The United States Capitol building, located in Washington, D.C., has housed the meeting chambers of the Senate and the House of Representatives for almost two centuries. Its cast-iron dome has 108 windows and offers magnificent views across the Mall to the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. This 19th-century neoclassical building sits atop a plateau, almost 90 feet above the level of the Potomac River.

Architects and designers:
Dr. William Thornton; Benjamin Henry Latrobe; Charles Bulfinch; Thomas U. Walter; Edward Clark; Elliott Woods; J. George Stewart; George M. White, FAIA; and Alan M. Hantman, FAIA.

Construction started 1793 and restoration continues to this day.

Please note: a negative was created of the original photo, it was then converted to grey scale and colorized using graphics manipulation software.
